Window Crashes ULead7

I am a total beginner ( actually haven't begun at all) with digital
video editing and am likely to remain so unless I can solve these
continual crashes.
We are running XP on a Pentium 4 with a G-Force 3 graphics card with
128 mgs of video graphic memory and 1.5 g of RAM. The hard drive is 110
g with 30 free.

U Lead Video Studio 7 came with the camera and it seemed an OK place
to start until I worked out what our needs for video editing were going
to be.
I have captured 3 films. I think I made a mistake capturing them as AVI
but then they have all been turned into VideoClips with no other file
extension available.

When I select a clip from the library to put it on the timeline (it
all sounds so simple in the instructions ) a pop up said it needed
relinking, when I selected the folder where the files are U Lead shuts
down with U Lead error.
I wondered if it was the U Lead so tried Windows Movie Maker that was
preinstalled on the computer... same problem go to import video the
program shuts down.
The videos can all be viewed using Windows Media Player.
I am guessing I am making some really basic error so apologise for my
ignorance in advance.. if I lived where they spoke English I would
attend a course and so might be able to solve my own problems
My brother keeps teling me a MAC would be easier... I have only ever
used PC's so don't know...for really simple basic home use is he right?
