I copied a VHS tape using Dazzle 9 with Studio 9. The final form was a DVD disk. The disk is OK, but the avi file on the HD of my computer appears unerasable. I've tried erasing from DOS (not really DOS since XP Pro no longer contains DOS but merely an emulation of some of its commands), tried to erase from safe mode, tried to delete using programs such as unlock, moveonboot, etc. None of them work. Interestingly enough a copy that was made of this large avi file while trying to get rid of it using MS tools didn't copy it with the erase resistant property and the copies were erasable. Attempts to rename and erase are hopeless since the file can't be accessed. Any suggestions. The file is 22 GB that's why I want to get rid of it from the HD.

Since you seem to know how to get to a command prompt (Start | Run |
cmd.exe) and enter commands, I'm inclined to ask if you checked the
attributes of the file in question? Perhaps it's marked System,
Hidden, and/or ReadOnly. Use the Attribute command to check.
attrib filename.avi
If this command shows the System, Hidden, and/or ReadOnly attributes
set, then simply remove them.
attrib filename.avi -s -h -r
Than try a Delete command.
del filename.avi
If the above doesn't work, I'd be very surprised.
Then you are surprised. That is normally the first thing that I try if I have trouble deleting or finding a file where it is supposed to be. I've used the IBMDOS and MSDOS for a very long time, much longer than the history of windows. I was a couple of years late in getting IBM type machines (until clones with pirated DOS were available.) Prior to that I used Z80 on an Apple ][+ and CP/M.
Sorry that doesn't come close to working. Note the directory (sorry... folder) is not erasable either. All this was simple under FAT12 or FAT32. You just used a disk editor and wiped out all the attributes or the FAT references. I don't know how to do such with NTFS. I suspect you also may have to wipe something from the registry as well.
