I have had my camera in to Precision Camera Repair twice now for sound dropouts, with no success. The picture remains good, but the sound just drops out for a brief instant periodically, randomly, as if the tape to head contact were being broken or interrupted. Doesn't make any sense.

Anyone else experience this? Does anyone have a clue what it might be?

Are you experiencing the drop-outs listening to the tape in the camera
or in the computer?

If in the computer, I had a similar problem. Bad controller on an
external hard drive.

I am coming slowly to the conclusion, bizarre though it might be, that it is the batch of tapes that I bought for a large project that is at fault, and not the camera. I shot a couple of weddings using different tape, and no dropouts. That was with the orange cello packaged tapes. My problems have been with the blue cello packaged tapes. All are Sony tapes, so it astonishes me that there could be a bad batch, but there is the evidence.

The sound is the first file that is recorded in the helical scan, right at the edge of the tape. If the tape had one edge bad, from slitting or heat during shipment, or whatever, it might explain why the sound could drop out but not the picture. I originally assumed it was the sound circuitry in the camera, or the tape head. I think Precision replaced my head drum and sound board, then I had to send the camera back to them to align the tape properly, because it wouldn't track other cameras' tapes. But now it does track them all, at both speeds.

Film at Eleven.
