The proper way to end up with only useful video and no unuasble video is to
do a batch capture. In the batch capture process you watch the video and
mark in and out points for the scenes you want, which leaves out those you
do not. Each time you mark and in and out point you log that and give it a
name. Once done click the record button and the computer takes over
capturing only the clips you want. While that is going on you can go have
lunch.
This saves disc space and other headaches in editing. Name you clips with
numbers at the beginning to have them automatically fall into the order you
want on the time line. After the number give it some name that gives you a
hint as to the content.

I have captured DV files with useful portion and useless ones.
I want to remove the junk to save disk space, but I don't want to end up
with several avi files with disjoint timeline -- I would have to realign
them with real-time or audio or with other video clips.
So, is there anything you can use to "stuff" the useless portion in an avi
file to save disk space without disrupting the timeline?
