Have you installed a software DVD player on your system? A DVD is not going
to automatically playback just because you have installed the DVD driver
proper. Sometimes your VGA card may ship with a software DVD player. Many
production DVD's have a software interface one may install from those
disces. The Memorex drive should have included some form of software player
in the box - like Nero Showtime. I assume that is the player from reading
the specs at the Memorex website.
If the discs in question were recorded on a standalone DVD recorder, those
discs should be finalized before they are playable on other DVD drives and
players. Before you draw any assumptions this drive is not working try
playing a production run DVD.
Another point. When you installed this drive did you make sure the jumpers
were correct for the placement of the drive on the IDE channel? Most CD and
DVD drives ship with the jumper as Master. If this is on a chain with
another master this could be a problem, or you may need to enable or disable
DMA on that part of the IDE channel. Depending on your OS you may need to
update the ASPI layer.
Or, that particular drive may just be bad. Have it installed by a
professional. If you bought it at Best Buy have them install it for you.
