AVI files to DVD

I got a new computer loaded with a DVD burner and the NTI software CD &
DVD Maker Gold version 7.0.0.6305 which is using the MPEG-1 encoding
support. It says you can download the MPEG-2 encoding plug-in from the
NTI website but I am not sure if I need it.
My question is: Can I wrap a bunch of my AVI home movies to burn a
DVD-R? I am not interested on creating a VCD or SVCD using a CD-R.
When I use this software and select the option to create a DVD, the
software looks for VOB, IFO or BUP files and expects to find or create
a VIDEO_TS folder to place these files prior to create a DVD. But all
my movies are in AVI format, and since the software is designed to
search for VOB, IFO or BUP formats, then it doesn't really sees the AVI
format.
Any suggestions?
I am pretty skilled on computers audio and video, but I am learning how
to work with a DVD burner, DVD-R's and AVI files, and the NTI support
have not answered my questions. Any help will be gratly appreciate it.
