Re: Captured AVI via 1394, playback shows extra lines

I used to have an 8mm Sony analog camcorder, and was playing such a tape on my Sony TRV730 (8mm digital which can play analog tapes).

The distortion seems to only be present on the bottom of the viewing screen in MM or MP. I don't recall if the wide lines occupy the entire bottom or just slightly above the bottom. They protrude about 3% beyond the normal left/right margins.

If these are indeed lines that are suppressed by regular TVs, will they appear when I burn them to DVD and play them? I don't care if they only show up on my PC.

I just captured my first video through firewire using Moviemaker.

I don't recall if this happened on the review screen during
capture, but when I play back the file in MM or Media
Player, there are some lines at the bottom of the screen
(half a dozen pixels or so) that are out of synch and slightly
wider than the rest of the image.

I'm going to try again and see if the lines appear during
capture, but I'd appreciate any info on how they got there.
Is it a function of camcorder (Sony TRV730), IEEE card,
video card, .avi file?

You didn't mention the original source of this video? The most likely cause of this kind of artifact is capturing video from an old VHS (or other analog) videotape. The lines at the absolute top and bottom of the frame are distorted by the way the signal is recorded (the spinning head drum, etc.) These distorted lines are masked on traditional CRT-based TV screens. But the entire frame is visible in digital media like a computer screen, an LCD/plasma TV set, or a video projector.

Two popular ways of eliminating these lines are to either
cover them with a thin strip of black, or to slightly enlarge
the picture. Beware that the second option could cause
other undesirable artifacts, I would prefer to just mask
the offending parts.
