Re: How can sound be out of sync on Firewire capture? Pinnacle Studio 9

Are your captured files Type 1 or Type 2 DV AVI?

Type 1 is a simple byte-for-byte copy of the DV data stream wrapped in a
suitable AVI header etc. The audio and video are stored together in each
frame.

Type 2 is basically Type 1 with a second copy of the audio stream stuck on
the end. A editor/player accessing this type of file can easily get out of
sync.

Full details at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/directshow/htm/type1vstype2dvfiles.asp
(and links therein).

IMHO, Type 2 files are bad news and exist soley for backwards compatibility,
especially with Video for Windows (VfW) based apps rather than DirectShow.
Vendors of new apps should be ashamed of themselves if they still depend of
VfW.

Does your capture program allow a choice between Type 1 and Type 2?

If not, try capturing from the OS - with XP, you should see your camcorder
listed in My Computer. You can open it, see the video and capture to disk.

( I was astonished recently when trying Premiere Pro 1.5 to discover that
when you render a new DV file, it creates Type 2 files with one audio format
in the true DV data area and a different one in the audio copy area.)

As far as Pinnacle Studio 9 is concerned, there's a lot of low opinion about
it (well, Pinnacle in general) on this and similar NGs. I have no personal
experience with it.
