Re: Need recommendation for very good capture hardware and software

Fan,

If you intend to do editing of the Hi-8 content, then using a PC makes a lot
of sense. If you merely want DVD copies of the Hi-8 tapes, there are low
cost DVD recorders which accept video directly from the camcorder or VCR and
then make excellent DVDs with no fuss and the least amount of time. This
method is particularly effective if you have a lot of tapes to convert.

If you are interested in using a PC,I would recommend you use a direct MPEG2
capture card which accepts video and audio input and makes DVD-compliant
MPEG2 files which can be edited and then burned to disk. Many of us use
Hauppauge PVR cards for this purpose with great success. They are extremely
inexpensive (about $60) and work very well, making excellent video quality,
certainly more than adequate for Hi-8 input.

An excellent and low cost PC approach is a Hauppauge PVR-150 or PVR-250 card
with software like TMPGE DVD Author to edit and then burn the video content
to a DVD.
