That is the only way available to most of us (amateur and
professional alike). For a while Sony made a mini-DVCAM
drive that fit into a computer drive bay. It would capture
video at 4x speed. But it was very expensive and required
special software, etc. It was made for the TV-news people
who needed real speed when editing breaking news, etc.

The data speed is the same in SP or LP mode. Only the
tape moves slower, so you can fit more on it.
