What are the advantages to using an agent? It's easy.
Isn't it cheaper to book everything yourself?Yes, almost invariably, it's much cheaper.
What should I look for in an agent?Something that you can't do just as well (if not better) yourself.
A guarantee that you will get money back when something isn't right.
My experience with travel agents is that they promise the earth, but
can only offer packages, even when they take about, "tailor-made to
your requirements".
When something goes wrong, the best you receive is being thanked for
helping them improve their service. Usually, the simply say that
they've never had any similar complaint before.
To travel around the western world, it is far easier to sort it out
yourself on the internet.
The only occasion I would choose to use an agent is outside the
western world - where I would not have the same confidence.
To sum up - book everything yourself. It's cheaper, you get what you
want and if anything goes wrong, and you are in control.
I've given up with travel agents!
