Sorry for all the questions , but I did go to AAA and they had no idea if snowy until May/June/July and park service website didn't have specifics either. I expected
http://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/index.htm to tell me how the weather IS ( like Yosemite's website does for example). I usually go to Yosemite in April/May and even when the ENTIRE park isn't open, ( the lower ) PART of it is drivable. I couldn't tell online if Crater Lake does the same thing - or if it's closed until " snow melts". It states merely:
" The park is always open, but many of the roads and facilities are closed during the winter." Not knowing what that meant to a first-timer, I came here to ask if it's worth the drive or should I skip it this trip.

With all your requirements/requests/apprehensions....have you thought of engaging the services of an honest to goodness travel agent? At the very least visit your neighborhood AAA office?
I ask this because it is becoming increasingly apparent that you seem not to be satisfied with the quality of information you are gleaning from this newsgroup. Of course, I could be wrong - you could well be 100% satisfied. And yet...you have these second thoughts, such as those expressed in your most recent post - which post puts anyone responding in the role of a forecaster/prognostic/foreseer of one type or another....

http://www.craterlakelodges.com/Weather-813.html
" Winter snow melt is unpredictable, but generally occurs by the first part of July. "
1. So safe to assume that in April/May that it's impassable ?
"Although park facilities mostly close for this snowy season, visitors may view the lake during fair weather"
2. So do they mean that I could stay in the car and drive around it ?
If this is typical for the entire area, maybe I'll NOT drive from Seattle down this year. I THOUGHT I'd combine a nice ride with some stops to enjoy that part of the country, but maybe I should consider - either doing it 'during summer or not at all ' ?? For those that know... whatd'ya think ?
Go / no go ?

map was to get an idea of how far a ride - not specifics on stopovers/ times etc - I'll create the timetable acccording to "what's to see/do" . I picked the towns on the map only to have the map hug the coastline.
Now - back to working on the updates according to suggestions so far.
Thanks
Bobb
I was thinking of driving only because I've driven the entire east Coast and on the west coast from SF to San Diego and want to do the NW just to complete the drive. I've also done across the bottom states but not the top ( Dakatos, Montana etc) - that 's my next target. But this year want the NW . Any input appreciated.
Thanks,
Bobb
