Around here, central Illinois, outside of town a house almost
always has at least 1 square mile of land, some two or more
That sounds pretty high to me. Most farms I've seen are a lot smaller.
I did a quick Google search and found some results from a 1999 U.S.
census which showed the average lot size in the U.S. was around 1/4
acre. Broken down by region, the largest lots were in New England
(about 3/4 acre average) and the smallest lots were in the Pacific
coastal areas (about 1/8 acre average).
