I occasionally used traveler's checks until a couple years ago, and I
noticed that clerks often didn't know how to handle them and would need
to call over a supervisor for assistance.

Most folks prefer using credit cards these days, but if you feel more
comfortable with traveler's checks, go ahead, you'll find that most
places accept them as long as they are in US currency by a major
company, and you have proper ID.
