For the week off, consider driving South, first to Hoover Dam, then the
Grand Canyon, then on to Tucson. Tucson and vicinity are the
quintessential West: desert, saguaro cacti, Spanish missions, and all.
Not to mention that it will be warm there in January.

If walkability is essential, however, then San Francisco is likely your
best choice.
