Depending on when in October you go and how the fall shapes up, you
might be able to catch the changing aspen leaves at Great Basin
National Park. That, along with Lehman Caves and the Bristlecone pines
could keep you busy for a couple days up there.
Closer to Las Vegas are Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks in Utah.
Zion, in particular, offers the possibility of multi-day backpacking.
If you go too late for the aspen at Great Basin, either of these
locations are possiblities for leaf peeping.
Mt. Charleston, Red Rock Canyon, and Valley of Fire are definitely the
outdoor attractions closest to Las Vegas. But only Mount Charleston
really offers the possiblity of multi-day backpacking.
