Looking at a map, my itinerary would look something like:
Vienna, Austria to Bratislava, Slovakia to Budapest, Hungary
to Belgrade, Serbia to Sophia, Bulgaria
With a few days in each spot.
You wouldn't want to spend more than a couple of days in Bratislava.
If you go to Slovakia, get out of the capital and go to a smaller
town (I went to Banska Bystrica and Kosice and can recommend both).
Trains within Slovakia are a bit slow but reliable and comfortable.
I've done the route from Budapest via Belgrade to Sofia and Istanbul,
many years ago (the other way). It wasn't easy to get food while in
transit at the time, outside the Turkish section. I imagine it's
better now but carry enough food and water to tide you over anyway,
train food is haphazard anywhere.
I've never got off a train or bus in Sofia, but I doubt it's one of
the better places in Bulgaria to stop at, unless you know the local
scene well.
