My daughter is currently in Barcelona on vacation. She will be returning to
the USA on a SpanAir flight that flies from Barcelona to Madrid, and then
she will change planes and board a Delta flight that will return her to the
states. The connection time in Madrid is one hour and ten minutes.

When she checks in on the SpanAir flight in Barcelona, will her luggage be
checked all the way back to the US? Or will she have to retrieve her
luggage in Madrid and have to check her luggage again in Madrid? If the
latter, is the 70-minute layover between landing and departure in Madrid
sufficient?

If the connection is too tight, would it be better for her to take a bus or
train from Barcelona to Madrid and forget the first leg of the flight? If
she does this without notifying the airlines, will Delta cancel their
portion of the flight? She is already ticketed and has her tickets.

You say "She is already ticketed and has her tickets". Does this mean she has two tickets? If that is the case then I would be very nervous about that connection. On the other hand, if the flights are both part of the same ticket I would expect Spanair in Barcelona to tag the bag through to the US and maybe even issue the boarding pass for the flight from Madrid. Should the Barcelona/Madrid flight be delayed and she is on one ticket Spanair has responsibility for finding her an alternative flight home - if it's two tickets she is on her own and effectively depending on Delta being nice to her.

What it bolis down to is 2 tickets = 2 contracts. 1 ticket = 1 contract.
