I'm not new, not gone, just mainly lurking. I try to answer when I
can, but no questions here this yr, because 2008 vacation is in the
US. We'll see what 2009 brings. Blame the dollar/euro values.
that must be a factor.
Much as I miss the ambiance, I'm certainly glad I did NOT retire to
Europe, as I had halfway hoped to do! (My limited income is all in U.S.
Dollars!)
Where would you have retired to? You can't just live in most European
countries any more than someone from Europe can just go and live in the
US. I've read of some options for people from the UK retiring to the US,
and it usually involves some kind of investment, or show of wealth.
Some EU countries have legacy citizenship programs... Ireland is very
easy with this ;-)

I know, but not all are that easy.

Germany also offers this for descendants of citizens who were forced to
leave due to the Nazi's.

That I didn't know. I expect they're rushing back.

I notice in the UK citizenship test "guide" (prospective citizens now
have to pass this test that most citizens would fail) it notes that
"unhappily" not all Jews were able to escape the Holocaust. It makes no
mention whatsoever of those that the UK refused entry to...

Unfortunately, the UK was not alone in that! (Anti-Semitism, along with racial and gender prejudice, is still alive and well, nearly everywhere - hopefully NOT in such extreme forms, but still there.)
