Oh, college teachers have freedoms high school teachers can but dream
of! But I was actually talking about high schools in MN and WI where I
taught. Of course, being the only German teacher offers more freedom
than in some subject areas, too. But I have also taught English.

I was talking about MN, too - perhaps that's why, especially back in the
1940's, we got a decent education, even in the public schools!
(Unfortunately, because of the war, my high school didn't offer German -
in addition to Latin, there was a choice of French or Spanish (both
taught by a lady with a heavy Breton accent). I've often regretted
opting for Spanish instead of French, but IIRC, there was a conflict
with Choir.

These days in the USA Spanish would seem to have been the better
choice.

Only if you care about people flocking here refusing to learn English.

They may eventually learn English, but you have to deal with them
now. Besides I go to a lot more Mexican resgtaurants than French
restaurants.

Why do you have to deal with them now? When I went to Mexico, I
learned enough Spanish to get along which isn't all that difficult.
And they can print their menus in English. I have never been in a
Mexican restaurant here that doesn't.

It was meant to be tongue in cheek, but, in any case, I have been
to restaurants in Mexico where no one spoke English nor were the
menus in English. Not in the usual tourist areas, of course. I've
also happened on a Mexican restaurant around here wehre no
English was spoken, but that's usually because some of them were
on break.
