We are planning a trip to Greece this April and will be driving. We
would like to use a GPS

One thing I forgot to mention about GPS in Greece is this:

The best paper maps (I think) are those published by Anavasi. They are
available in Greece and from their website (www.anavasi.gr). They are very
accurate and use a grid based on the Greek Map Datum GGRS**. This is similar
to the OS grid system used by British OS maps.

If you have a hand-held Garmin GPS which displays your grid position and
allows a selection of Map Datums you can set it up with a user grid to use
the Greek grid system. This is extremely useful (not so much when driving,
but if you do any walking at all) since it allows you to pin-point your exact
position at any time on the paper map using your GPS and so in theory you
should never get lost. For walking the combination of a GPS and an accurate
paper map is unbeatable in my view. It's certainly miles better than any
mapping hand-held GPS units that I have seen.

This all sounds rather geekish perhaps, but believe me if I can do it, anyone
can. The instructions on how to set up your GPS (for Garmin only, sorry I
don't know about other makes) are printed (in English) on some (but not all)
of the Anavasi maps. Also on the website but only in Greek unfortunately.
(you might be able to decipher it though, even if you don't read Greek (I
don't). The figures to enter are all there; it would help to know the
alphabet though).

**GGRS = Greek Geodetic Reference System
