know a clean and safe 2-star very near the station, but it may not
meet your standards.

What's the name of it? It would almost certainly meet my standards,
whether it meets the standards of the spousal unit and sister-in-law is
another story. I've stayed in ½ star hotels in China and Russia and been
fine with them.

The Albergo Lucia: http://www.hotel-lucia.com

It was recommended to me by DFM on this newsgroup, and I've stayed
there several times since and recommended it to others. It's not in
the most convenient part of town for sightseeing, but it's a fairly
easy walk to the Roman Forum and to Villa Borghese.

It's a nice simple mom-and-pop hotel (along with son). The family
lives on the premises. The street is a bit tawdry, but the hotel is
clean and comfortable. There are several hotels in the building, and
an ancient elevator. There is air conditioning, which works fairly
well. No breakfast. It's ideal for someone needing to stay near
Termini. However, I agree with Poetic Justice that for someone with
tons of luggage and little travel experience, it might be better to
get a hotel in another part of the city and use a car service to
effect the transfers. After all, they are surely spending thousands on
the cruise and another $150 or so won't break them. Otherwise, they
would have to pay for the train to Termini, lug their luggage to the
hotel (unless they get a cab to go one or two blocks) get a cab back
to Termini, then from the station in Civitavecchia to the port.

Certainly a car service from the airport to the hotel in downtown Rome
will not cost much more for two people than the train + cab,
especially since the cab tacks on a flat charge for each piece of
luggage.
