They would go on in French, and when one
came to a word they weren't sure of in French they would, without
a beat, switch to English, then bakc to French, usw. I sometimes
see the same sort of thing here in Tucson with Spanish and
English.

SWMBO and myself do exactly that as well in German and English.

My partner does this whether he's talking Spanish or English to me! It's
a very bizzare mix sometimes! :)

My brother often uses the Norwegian word for something when we talk, not
quite aware he's doing it- especially with technical things to do with
his work.

I used to do mid-sentence switches constantly with a German friend who
was extremely fluent in English when I was studying over there. We
confused bystanders from time to time 8-)

What actually happens to me normally is simply that I answer in either
English or German depending on the last language heard. It's rather
like flipping a switch, as I'm sure many in this newsgroup understand.
What can really confuse people who don't speak German is that I'm liable
to say something in German if that's what I'm reading when interrupted.
