I am booking my first holiday abroad in France, and doing so over the
internet. I have chosen a cottage on the south coast which seems to
tick all the boxes. However - the owner has emailed dates to me for
when I should send a deposit and the full balance. He has also asked
for a security deposit of 400 Euros, which he will release back to me
within a week after the holiday in the event that there is no damage
to the property. This presented me with a couple of issues - firstly,
how do I send a payment direct to his bank account (he included these
details) from a Great British bank to his French account (do banks
facilitate a transfer?) and more importantly, is it normal practice to
demand a 400 Euro security - I thought holiday insurance was the
normal option here? Is this something I should be wary of?
There are internet-based services for delivery of foreign currency by
check. Here in the states, www.oanda.com is my favorite currency
facility. I expect that GB has similar dervices. If correspondent has
a bank with a branch in GB, then you could try making a deposit
directly at his bank.
400 Euros is not an unreasonable sum to ask as deposit for potential
damages to a residence. =R=
