An American has rocked the educational establishment of France

Yeah yeah yeah, sure it's gonna be an American that makes France look
at itself.

Similar problems in Italy too. I've met a number of 'english' teachers
here who are too ashamed to speak to me.

I've yet to meet an English teacher in Italy who is willing to speak
English with me.

I don't recall ever meeting a French teacher of English who was
unwilling to speak English with me -- perhaps because my French is
fair rather than fluent. All were able to communicate at least
adequately, and most had an excellent command of the language. I can
recall only one who made some mistakes that I think indicated a lesser
command of the language than I would considerable desirable if one is
to teach it.

I know some Irish people who teach French whose command of the
language is less than mine -- and I would not think my command of
French is sufficient for me to teach it.

I think that sort of thing happens everywhere. It surprises me that
now that we have so much labour market freedom in the EU, so few
native speakers are employed as language teachers.
