My wife and I plan to visit Ireland for up to two weeks. We can come
in either August, September or October. Weather-wise it would seem
that August is the best time to travel (self-drive). But, over the
years I've learned that while important, weather shouldn't be the soul
criterion. I would appreciate advice from any fellow travellers or
from locals. Thanks!
Nothing is certain about weather in Ireland! Without looking up
tables, I would agree that August is a good bet, but September is not
far behind. Whatever time of year you visit, bring raingear, but you
will probably not need full sou'wester and wellies. We have a fair
amount of wind, too, generally not enough to make life difficult, but
your hair will be ruffled and ill-fitting hats are at risk.
September has advantages. The kids are back in school, and the number
of holidaymakers (Irish and overseas) is much reduced, but the season
is not completely finished. So you can get the best of everything:
most seasonal things are still available, and the pressure on
accommodation, restaurants, and attractions is reduced. For such
reasons, it is a time of year Herself and I like to target for
recreational trips.
In my mind, I associate October with rain. I could be wrong.
Read my views with caution. I live in Ireland, and that can distort my
perceptions as well as inform them.
