I took the ICE from Düsseldorf to Amsterdam a couple months back.. The
German conductors spoke flawless Dutch and English (either that, or they
were Dutch, in which case it wouldn't be much of a surprise).

Never in a million years would I expect that from SNCF staff. So I think
on the net the customers are better off with this arrangement anyway.

The French are known for not being the world's best linguists, but at
least the Thalys in France is fast, not the pathetic milk-train it
becomes in Holland.

Try going to Liege from Leiden.

Is it worse than Durham-Newcastle - a 10 minute journey that always
seems to take at least an hour?

Eh, it's just over 10 minutes whenever I've taken it, including
recently. Maybe there were train problems that day?

It's probably among the most frequent and highest speed services in the
UK.

The actual traveling time is about 10 mins, but that doesn't take into
account the time you spend waiting for delayed or cancelled trains and
shuttling between platforms.

On Friday there was even the ridiculous situation where there was a
display saying "The next train to arrive at this platform terminates
here. Do not board". In fact the next train to arrive was the delayed
12.55 or whatever, and everyone boarded.
