I keep it in my room, and carry a copy. I consider most hotel rooms to be
completely safe for things like passports and credit cards, though there is
nothing wrong with using the room safe except the possibility of forgetting
to take your stuff out!
Same here.
On normal days, I carry enough cash for one day's activities and the
passport copy. That way I can get pick pocketed without wrecking the
vacation. If I need money, I also carry my ATM card.
They haven't actually gotten my wallet yet, but I'm counting on it happening
at some point. On the escalator in a Russian subway I had a close one where
I wound up staring the would be pickpocketters in the eyes for several
minutes as we rode the escalator down. Sort of a Mexican standoff, where
neither of us really admitted anything had happened. During that time, I
considered taking my wallet out and offering it to them as a way to create a
memorable moment for them, sort of like "come and get it, sucka!". Fantasy.
I use one of those traveling wallets where it's hooked to my belt and
folded inside my pants.
