So you're one of those "Don't bother to learn any phrases in
Italian, they all speak English" boors? Perhaps one reason
I've yet to encounter "rudeness" anywhere in my travels is
that I am always very aware that I am a GUEST in someone
else's country, and try to behave accordingly. That
includes learning a few basic phrases in their language -
like "good morning" and "excuse me" and "please" and "thank
you".

Au contraire. Non è vero.

Yes, those phrase can be useful, too

Parlo Italiano abbastanza bene. E tu?

Un po' (Enough, at least, to know one never uses "tu" to a complete stranger!) Lo canto piu bene, ma le parole son un po' arcaico per la conversazione.

Come si dice "Prat"?

Come lei? Credo che "asino" é basta.

i'm italian. may i correct you? in a NG, in italian "lei" is never used. just "tu"

Thank you, obviously I don't post in Italian much, so assumed it was the same as when one speaks Italian to a stranger. (Although Italian is more consistent than most languages, there are always exceptions to confuse the student of languages.)

I agree with you. when one travels need to know at least some phrases in local language. especially in Italy, where, believe me, very few people speak a foregneir language.

So perhaps another useful phrase would be "é possibile parlare piu lento, per piacere"? (Considering how VERY few people born in America speak anything but English, I've often wondered why Americans abroad expect people in other countries to speak anything but their own native tongue.)
