I am from the US and have done very little travelling in my 66 years.

across either the Atlantic or Pacific. I want to visit a very sick friend

should I travel from Atlanta, GA? Direct to Florence? Where should I go
besides Cortona in the few days I have? I may have to go alone, I am
female, 66 though not feeble, know nothing but English and have a hearing
problem. Any suggestions about how I can make this trip less daunting?
Cost not much of an issue. Thanks for any help!
It isn't difficult to travel in Italy, and your age should be no
barrier. If you have trouble hearing someone, use the universal signal
of hand cupped around ear, and they'll understand.
I live in Italy, and will be happy to answer any other questions you
might have. In the meantime, here are my suggestions:
Good show, Barbara! While some may scoff at this suggestion, for an
inexperienced, insecure traveler making some note cards with pertinent
questions printed in Italian might provide some degree of security. I know
that when I used to travel in foreign countries I had "I am allergic to
shrimp" written on a piece of paper that I carried with me. Didn't want to
take a chance screwing that up due to faulty pronunciation.
