I don't think you're overstating the problem- I've heard it from many
people off Usenet as well. However, we had a completely problem free
trip there, and of course that's the case for most people who go. I
don't think it's a dangerous place, by any means, but it's probably the
case that you need your wits about you there than in quite a few other
tourist areas.


Talking about Barcelona, back when it was just a problem for the
tourists very little was actually done. Those were the times when the
police knew the face of everyone 'working' in the Rambla and nearby
areas.

It has not been until the local population has been affected that the
local authorities are trying seriously to do something. Just last week,
over 10 (mostly Romanian) couples have been detained for forcing their
children to steal, and the kids put under State custody (about 50,
btw).

There are similar gangs working on the London underground as well.
