Slang is most often a valid word (or phrase) used in an invalid context.
Chemist is a valid word, but I will wager that the only country on Earth
where it is used to refer to a pharmacist is the UK. If it were used in
Canada and the other English-speaking countries in that context, then
the case could be made that it is not slang. By definition, a chemist is
someone who practices chemistry, but all chemists are not pharmacists.

By whose definition? Any British dictionary would certainly define it as
"pharmacist" among other possibilities. In fact, it is common practice when
referring to a chemist who is NOT a pharmacist in Britain to make it clear
that s/he is, say, an industrial or academic chemist rather than a
pharmacist. I suppose it's like the most common use of "doctor" in the UK to
mean a medical practitioner, while I as "Dr Harrison" would often make it
clear that I'm not a quack. In fact the latter usage is even stranger, in
that the most common usage of "doctor" in Britain refers to people who don't
have a doctorate but only a first degree in medicine.
