If you stayed more up north, you could make day trips to many super places
icluding Firenze.
Then you would stay in Bologna, which is worth itself a visit and is a
railway crosspoint.
I stayed there a few days in a 3* hotel worth 4, one street behind the
station , and everyday I had a day trip to a different city.
Rome would be too far, but anyway one day isn't enough.
Moerover, depending on where you depart from, Bologna is reachable by
lowcost flights.
