Dutch Re: What other languages

I also wonder (if there is any dutch or belgian listening) how both call
(commonly and officially, if different) their language IN their
language.

We've been having a sort of quarrel on an italian linguistic NG about
how it has to be called in Italian. We commonly call the dutch language
"olandese" (from Olanda, Holland) and flemish "fiammingo".

Now I know that referring to the Netherlands, aka the Low Countries, as
"Holland" is incorrect, as Holland is just a region, but surely not
offensive (surely no more than calling themselves "dutch" when speaking
in english). Unfortunately the official denomination of the state as
rendered in Italian ("Paesi Bassi" which is exactly Low Countries) is
not prone to form an adjective (an hypothetical "paesebassese" would
sound ridiculous in italian).

Somebody proposed (in Italian) the form "neerlandese" which to me looks
a cast on French. I presume the form in "neer" is not the correct one in
Dutch (is it not "Nederland" or "Nederlanden" ?) but I wonder were it
came from.
