You need a definite plan and timeline. However, knowing nothing about
you, I"ll offer the following (assuming this is your first trip to
Madrid area and you have a week; trips not necessarily in an particular
order):
Day 1: Arrive in Madrid. I'd get a hostal near Plaza de Santo Domingo
or Plaza de Callo (near la Gran Vía). Visit la Plaza Mayor & Madrid de
los Austrias (walking). Make a reservation to visit el Prado for later
in the week.
Day 2: El Escorial (by train)
Day 3: Toledo (by bus or train)
Day 4: Segovia (by bus or train)
Day 5: Chinchón (by bus)
Day 6: Cercedilla (by train; Sierra de Guadarramam; walk on Roman
roads)
Day 7: Visit el Mueso del Prado (by subway and/or walking)
These certainly aren't the only possibilities, but they're a good intro
to Madrid area.
