I think you should rent a car for two or three days in the following
region. There are a number of Roman artifacts in the area and some
noyable newer ones.

Nimes: The arena is in considerably better condition than at Arles.
The Maison Carre Roman temple is in good shape.

Pont du Gard: Huge Roman aquaduct which brought water to Nimes.

Orange: Roman theater in much better shape than Arles. Triumphal Arch
also in good shape.

Aigues Mortes: Walled city near the sea whence the ?? Crusade departed
in the 13th century. Urban spill-over on only one side and a canal on
another one.

Perrier spring has tours.

Avignon: 14th Century Palace of the Popes from the period when they
were here, not in Rome. The city still had its wall but there has been
a lot of expansion beyond the wall.

One of my favorite regions in France.
