What the original poster did not mention is the death rates so far
of people who have gotten the H5N1 flu. Those rates are over 50%.
The problem is that we don't know how many people got this flu
"light" and did not report being ill.
We are in a precautionary period. So much so that my expectation
is that mobilization to block the spread of the flu, if it mutates,
will be successful.
Next the infection of wild birds in western Europe may be delayed until
next year when they return from Africa, to where the current bird
flu is likely to go, brought in from Eastern Europe.
The big question is how virulent the human H5N1 will be once is
fuses with H1N1. And if the currently being developed vaccines
work against the fused form, as well as the stockpiled anti-virals
like Tamiflu. So we are in a wait and see period with the authorities
preparing as best they can.
