I'm certain that looks are the problem in some cases.

And I'm equally certain that if I were actually stupid enough to put a
picture on my CV, as French employers often mysteriously require, I'd
be immediately rejected for many positions.

Computer jobs. I used to work in that field. There are other things
I can do, but if people aren't willing to hire me with all my computer
experience, they certainly would never give me a chance in any other
domain.

I tried headhunters and specialized recruiters a few times, but they
rejected me.

A few times. Their only comments are that I need a photo and my age,
marital status, etc., which I will not put on a CV.
