This is true, but it might also be helpful to ensure that your original
booking quoted local currency.
Interestingly, while I got self-fleeced on the hotel currency
conversions, the ATM transactions were free, and converted at market
rates. The only ATMs I used (just happened to be convenient) belonged to
Ulster Bank. I did a quick web search, and found they are owned by the
bank I belong to in the UK (Royal Bank of Scotland) which _might_
explain it.
