Italy has kind of a duality going - the large public and business sectors
are rather corrupt and wasteful...but the small business sector (dominated
by "family" - type concerns) is very efficient, they are an engine driving
the Italian economy.
"Latins" are generally very loyal to family, you might say that the concept
of "altruism" only extends to their immediate families and friends, not to
society as a whole (especially in Italy's case). This can blind them to
larger societal concerns - or work to their advantage (or disadvantage) when
engaging in business. In Italy's case small family - run businesses are a
real success story...
