I think Catalan is a separate language. When in Barcelona, I found it
comletely incomprehensible even though I'm Hispanic. I do not find
Italian, French, or Portuguese completely incomprehensible even though
I don't speak them; I do fairly well with the written languages. I've
heard Romanian only once (overheard, actually) and too little of it to
know anything but that's the language I heard.

I once found Catalan incomprehensible; then I had a business meeting in
Barcelona that included long sections in Catalan. After a couple of
hourse listening Catalan, it sounded similar enough to some Italian
northern dialects that I could almost understand it. An added difficulty
is that it is not easy to guess the correct pronunciation from the
written spelling.

I have a "pirate" video of a televised "Falstaff" from the Brussels Opera, with subtitles in some Romance language I have never been able to identify. It contains elements of Italian, French and Spanish, but is none of the above. (Nor is it Portuguese, which I would recognize.) I am quite sure it is not Romanian, which I understand bears very little resemblance to other Romance languages. Could it possibly be Catalan?
