We never, ever, EVER waste money on gambling.
If you view going to a ship's casino as purely a risk in hopes of
large winnings, I agree. However, I view the casino as an optional
form of entertainment and the "cost" of being there equivalent to
buying a ticket to a boardwalk amusement at a seaside resort.
Some people spend a lot of time buying tacky T-shirts and tschotkes
while ashore (I don't). I spend a few hours spread over the length of
a cruise in the Casino and probably shell out a lot less money.
If you get fun from gambling and don't mind losing the money, then by
all means go ahead. I don't get any fun out of gambling, so I don't
do it. My mother cured me of that, and if she hadn't, training mice
in a skinner box would certainly have done it.
I do buy stuff when ashore as souvenirs/gifts for people but that may
not contribute much to the ship's bottom line and I buy small stuff
just to show people that I am thinking of them. Sometimes post cards
but more often small inexpensive local craft items.
But basically each of us must evaluate for ourselves what it pleases
us to do and whether the cost of doing it gives us sufficient return
on the investment of time and money.
