Also consider that the fuel surcharge may only be a few dollars. People
look past that the part where the cruise lines can charge UP TO $9 or
$10 pp per day... but those fees were when the price of oil was $140 a
bbl. A new fuel surcharge with the price of oil around $70 to $80 per
bbl is likely to me much less.
But didn't they start it at $5/day? Obviously if they made it $2/day people would not be nearly as upset but would it be worth the hassle for such a small amount?
$2 pp per 7 days = $14 pp. Times 2500 passengers =$35,000 per week per ship.
Times 20 ships = $700,000 per week.
Times 4 weeks a month = $2.8 million per month, or
Times 52 weeks and you have $36.4 million a year.
And all they have to do is add it to your onboard account or
onto your reservation.
And do they allow customers to cancel if the surcharge is imposed? I so, do they want to give customers a way to cancel when business isn't all that great?
Right now, probbably not. Carnival Corp has said that with the economy the way it is, theya ren't looking to add more costs on at this time. But if the cost of fuel keeps going up, they will.
FWIW, I talked to a Royal Caribbean rep yesterday and he said they were told that they have no immediate plans to add a fuel surcharge... but they are "watching the situation closely".
Price of oil dropped a bit yesterday so who knows? For right now, none of the lines seem to be leaning towards adding a surcharge.
