No, you are supposed to know that certain places one goes, one is
supposed to tip. That is called socialization and should have been taken
care of in childhood by observation, and inculcation of cultural mores
by the parents and other adults.

Tell you what - I will personally tip all of the people I am
"supposed" to tip, on the condition that they accept a check and give
me a receipt. If there is no record of them receiving my tip, they
might be tempted to avoid that "cultural more" of paying tax on their
income.

Cruise ship employees are not US citizens and don't work in the US so
they don't have to pay US taxes.

Besides which, paying by credit card (as is usual) is a far better
paper trail than a personal check.
