Your friend needs to decide which of the Rivers he wants to cruise on, the time
of year because this affects price significantly as well as enjoyment. Some
clients have been pressuring us to join them on a "Christmas Markets" Cruise in
December in Germany but I am resisting. I know what the weather is like then and
I would much rather be all bundled up in a Hotel or Cafe than on a River Boat.

Viking River Cruises is at the upper end of the spectrum, and rightfully so, but
there are many operators and just like an Ocean Cruise or a Resort, you tend to
get what you pay for. Also to be considered are the various Barge Cruises which
are about as laid back as you can get. Small and quiet with less than 20
passengers usaully.

One final caveat, if he is planning this as a surprise for his wife, he had
better be considering her wishes in all aspects. Been there, done that, and a
big ticket surprise is dificult to do.

I know this has been discussed here before but as usual when it does not
concern me at the time, I don't give it that much attention.
A couple, who are very good friends of ours, want to go on a European River
Cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary next year. The husband
wants to surprise his wife and make the plans without her knowledge for now.
He has asked me to do some research as to which company is the best to go
with as they have never cruised before.

I know that T/As, Cal Ford and Joseph Coulter may have personal experience
and have probably done river cruises...Anyone who can direct me the right
way so I can give him some good advice, please chime in!
