Best time of year for Hawaii cruise

I don't suppose there is really a bad time to go to Hawaii, cruise or
otherwise, but I'm trying to talk the family into going next year.
Most of us still have some flexibility time for vacation planning and
wondered about the opinions here. I spent a few years on Oahu many
years ago when I was in high school but don't have good recollection
about things like rainfall. I do remember being fascinated by the
superlight rain that barely got us wet. I also remember many
frog-stranglers (actually the land got swamped by huge toads after a
heavy rain). Am I right in thinking that the summer rains are less
and lighter than those in winter months? Anything else that would
make certain times of year better than others? Thanks.
