Are you seriously suggesting that "the soldiers" -- again, you're speaking in absolutes -- have no capacity for coming to a conclusion about a topic unless and until the media brings up the subject?

No, I am suggesting it was pretty much a non-topic until the media asked them about the "problem". Like:

"How do you feel about Google making hi resolution pictures of your base available to everyone, including the insurgents?"

They would ask this without mentioning the fact that these pictures are easily available from other sources and have been for years. The only thing Keyhole did was make it more user friendly. That is the point....
Why wasn't the media asking about this issue BEFORE Google Earth.
For instance, a year ago, were they asking how they felt about NASA making such pictures available? You seem to think that this is some new breach of national security, which it isn't. Your focus has been on Google Earth as the cause of some "problem" the media decided recently to ask soldiers about. The media has an agenda in doing so. The media hasn't done much to IMPROVE the moral. You appear to be blaming Google, when you should put the blame on the media for sensationalizing something that was a non-issue.
