Re: Google Earth, a must!

Be careful with confusing perception with fact. The perception is that their security has somehow been comprimised. The fact is that they are just as secure/insecure today as they were a year ago.

You previous posts seemed to indicate their feeling of insecurity was Google Earth's fault, when it was actually the news media causing it.

Of course I understand that. What matters to me is the soldiers' perception.

Their perception is being shaped by the new media. This is NOT the fault of Google. Do you think terrorists need Google to get the pictures?
They don't need to get the pictures from Google. It isn't that difficult to get them from other sources. The biggest thing about Google Earth is that it is free. The pictures didn't just become available to the public.

Almost one year ago, the son of one of our oldest friends -- a young man I have known since birth -- was killed in combat. I know the pain everyone who loved this young man has experienced. I would happily forego a wholly discretionary enterprise like Google Earth if doing so means a higher level of morale for our troops.

Would you forego the use of oil? This is the fundamental reason we are there.

Google Earth did nothing to hurt the morale, news media hype did that.
