You'll also see a number of JR East passes other than 4 day flex and 5 and
10 consecutive. The offer a daily Tokyo Free Ticket (Kippu) for 1580
yen...good for Tokyo area JR and both subway lines, buses and trams. JR
West also has a number of alternative solutions. Depending on what you're
itinerary is it may actually be cheaper than the Japan Rail Pass.

Just discovered that you cannot purchase Japan Rail passes in Japan. My
mistake, should have read the website. Is there really no way to get a
Japan Rail pass in Japan, perhaps through some sort of Internet
purchase? I noticed that they sell a Japan Rail pass east which covers
eastern Honshu. Is it an option to purchase a number of separate passes?
