I go there 2-3 times a year. I have no problems with personal safety,
apart
from the occasional unstable sidewalk/footpath. It's not a hugely
late-opening town but I've been around Blok M at 1am or so without
feeling
uncomfortable. Jakarta taxi drivers - especially from the Blue Bird
Group -
are among the most reliable in Asia.

Thanks George. Is there anything to see in Jakarta? I heard that years
ago they tore down lots of colonial era architecture to make place to
modern buildings.

There is quite a bit of colonial arcitecture around the Fatahillah Square
area, though except in the actual square much of it is badly neglected.
The mayor announced a renovation campaign a couple of years back but I don't
know if there is any real progress yet.
If you do wander around there, the Cafe Batavia in the square is a lovely
bar (the upstairs bar) though expensive.

Most Indonesians are not exactly nostalgic for the Dutch period.

Here are some things to see around Jakarta including the old colonial stuff:http://www.bycel.com/Indonesia/Indon_Jkt_day_or_2.htm

As for not being a late opening town, I would not fully agree. The problem
for visitors is knowing where the nightlife is, as it is scattered widely,
not in a pedestrian area so you usually need a car/taxi and ideally a local
friend/guide. Also some nightspots are hidden away behind offices or
shopping centres and under the big hotels, so you need guidance to find
them. Many bars etc are open until 1 or 2am, and some clubbing venues are
open 24 hours around the weekend.
Some of the nightlife is listed here: (though not much of the clubbing stuff
and none of the many karaoke bars and Chinese places):http://www.bycel.com/Indonesia/Indon_Jkt_pubs_and_clubs.htm

Fully agree on the footpaths!

Express Taxis are also good.

You're right up to a point. Alfred doesn't strike me as a karaoke/
nightclub kinda guy, but who knows. My point was that Jakarta doesn't
have teeming streets of revellers at 4am like Hong Kong. Even Blok M
seems to wrap up between 1am and 2am, even at the weekend. Jl Jaksa
earlier still. Not that they are the key nightspot areas. Mind you, as
I get older, that's usually late as I can manage. I'm sure there are
all-night places - does the dreaded Tanamur still exist? - but I don't
know them.
